Ancient Egyptian farmers were usually peasant and unskilled workers. They were the people who couldn't really do much to benefit the city. The farms that they worked on were owned by military officials and government officals. At the end of the harvest season, any leftover grains or crops were free to be taken by the farmers. If they could gather enough grain to feed their family for many months, they could build up their trade supply and become wealthier. If there wasn't an abundance of leftovers, farmers would gather the most possible.
