During the years of the French revolution, he fought at first as volunteer private in the revolutionary Army. He soon was appointed staff officer and then, in 1797, he was appointed brigadier general in the Army of Rhine. In 1798, after some 5 months as Commander of the Army of Rome, he was transferred to the Army of Mainz as Commander of its left wing.
