For the US to seize the island with its airfields. This would prevent the Japanese from using the island as a fighter defense & early warning post against US B-29 bombers flying from the Marianas Islands to bomb the Japanese Home Islands. It would also allow the US to base its own fighters on the island to provide fighter escort for the bombers when they arrived over Japan. The Iwo Jima airfields also served as emergency landing fields for B-29's that were damaged or had engine trouble during these long-rang missions to Japan. The removal of Japanese military air on the island also allowed the US Navy ships & submarines to approach Japan closer before being discovered. It prevented Japanese long-range suicide air strikes against the US bases in the Marianas Islands.
