The War of the Roses. Or sometimes the Wars of the Roses.
One of the chief political happenings was the struggle for possession of the throne between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. From 1455 to 1485, they engaged in a series of battles, vying for the crown. The House of York used the emblem of the white rose, and the House of Lancaster used a red rose-- thus the battles were called "Wars of the Roses."
Henry VI's family name was Lancaster. He was a member of the House of Lancaster, which was one of the two rival branches of the Plantagenet dynasty that vied for control of the English throne during the Wars of the Roses.
