it wanted a strong national government.
Four presidents were members of the United States Whig Party: William Henry Harrison (1841) John Tyler (1841-1845) Zachary Taylor (1849-1850) Millard Fillmore (1850-1853) Whig presidents have governed for 8 years in total. The above is true, but fails to note that the Whig Party was actually one of the two dominant parties in the elections above (the other party was the Democrat-Republican Party, the predecessor to the current-day Democratic Party). The Whig party opposed the expansion of slavery, while the Free-Soil party specifically focused on preventing the spread of slavery into new territories. The Know Nothing party, on the other hand, was anti-immigrant and aimed to restrict immigration and naturalization.
It pitted the Democratic party against the Whig party.
