Almost exclusively, the birch was used to discipline children and adolescents in Tudor times. The birch consisted of a thick and heavy bundle of birch twigs bound together to form a handle at one end, and left free to form a spray or 'bush' at the other end. Children and adolescents were flogged with the birch on their bare buttocks. Floggings were savage and harsh, leaving the victim's buttocks and thighs (often including the anoperineal triangle) a mass of raw and lacerated flesh. Although boys came in for the most floggings, because it was they who attended schools where the birch was most used, there is evidence that it was used on girls as well, as in the case of Lady Jane Grey.
