The Hupa (or Hoopa) Indians lived in a wide swath of the coastal mountains and valleys of northern California. This area has hot, dry summers with very occasional rains. Fall tends to be dry and breezy. Winters are mild compared to most of the country. There is very little snow in winter but rains are frequent. Winter has only moderate freezes. Spring is long and mild.

The Hupa are one of the few federally recognized tribes in California, gaining recognition from President Grant in the 1870s. The Hoopa Indian Reservation is sometimes called 'the Square' because of its shape on the map. The area is quite beautiful but portions of the forest are excessively cut.
