President Wilson did sign the Treaty of Versailles, but he had foolishly refused to bring Representatives and Senators, particularly Henry Cabot Lodge, the majority leader in the house. This may have biased the legislature against the treaty, but the main reason the U.S. did not agree to the Treaty of Versaille was not that they thought it was too harsh, it was that the League of Nations had become part of the treaty. The U.S. did not want its foreign policy decided by another body, so they rejected the treaty. There is a certain irony that the League of Nations was the addition that the legislatures disliked, as it was the only part of Wilson's 14 points to make it onto the Treaty.

The three leaders of the Paris Peace Conference who was Woodrow Wilson, Geroge Clemeceau, and Llyld george all wanted something different from the treaty of Versailles. France wanted revenge, USA wanted a actual peace that would last a long time, and Britain actually wanted to help Germany because it was an important trading partner. This led to the vagueness of the treaty which made it ineffective. Germany started to ignore the treaty after some time.

Actually it wasn't a good treaty at all and it was a major factor in leading to WW2. In my opinion the treaty was a good decision as all the countries involved in the war would have their say for what to happen after the war. However all the countries did not. Countries such as Austria and Germany were left out of the treaty and had no say. Yes, it is fair to say that Germany had to be punished for what they had done in the war, but the punishments were too harsh. Germany was blamed for the start of the war (which in a way was rightly so) but also were fined such a great amount that it lead to inflation in Germany. Due to the Treaty Germany had suffered so much that the German people were desperate for change. Adolf Hitler promised them that change and the German people looked up to him giving him power. It was the Treaty that led to WW2 therefor the treaty was in-justified and unfair.

Hitler used the Treaty of Versailles as a devious excuse to try and turn Germans towards Nazism. But these days most people do not research this important often-misinformed episode of history to understand the correct facts. Germany actually decided to stop paying reparations of the Versailles Treaty in 1931 ! 8 years before WW2 started. The Nazis were not in power in 1931 - they did not even have 20% of German voter support at that time. The Treaty of Versailles was not a REAL issue for Germany at that time...... the Nazis had horribly low popularity up until 1933 - and they only won the German election that year with 44% of the vote ( aided by Brownshirt thugs trying to deter opposition votes ).

Most people do not know that Germany was actually secretly re-arming its military inside the Soviet Union - the Germans were making military trade deals with the Soviets in the late 1920s and early 1930s - Look it up- it seems astonishing, but it is true. All this BEFORE the Nazis seized power.

In the 1870s, France and Prussia fought a major war. The Germans actually imposed an even more severe reparation penalty on the French than the Versailles Treaty did after the Germans won that war. Harsh humbling reparations are nothing new in the extensive violent inter-European history of wars. The reparations of Versailles tried to cover the massive economic destruction the German military did in the French industrial areas on the Western Front in WW1; this included stealing whole French resource factories.

The first answer above incorrectly declares Germany started the war. The Austrians started the set-up for the war but all the leaders of the European major powers arrogantly led their nations into an unnecessary war -out of foolish pride. It should be also remembered that Germany suffered more severely under the Kaiser during WW1 itself through his harsh repressive actions towards the Germans who were half starved. The idea Germany alone suffered after WW1 is wholly inaccurate. The countries Germany invaded were devastated and areas they occupied often obliterated for a long time - if not forever. The Great Depression also hit many Great Powers - it was not just Germany in an economic pit at some point after WW1.
