Garrett Morgan was a pioneering African American inventor and businessman. One of his significant accomplishments was the invention of the three-position traffic signal in 1923, which improved road safety by introducing a signaling system that included a "caution" light. Additionally, Morgan developed a safety hood and smoke protector, an early version of the gas mask, which was used by firefighters and saved lives during hazardous situations, notably in a 1916 tunnel explosion rescue.
