Leon was a brilliant orator, and had fantastic charisma - Lenin respected him for both these things. Furthermore Trotsky was a highly intelligent guy - which i think scared his competitors. Moreover he had lots of kudos within the Bolshevist party with regard to his leading role in the 1917 October revolution. He was highly respected by the younger members of the group.
He also had a very strong view on communism for Russia - and even spreading it around the world, which Lenin (partially) agreed with.
Furthermore Lenin (before he pointed out the negatives of Trotsky) had pointed out in his last will that he thought Trotsky could have been the best man for the job of leader.
Hope this helps
