What were firearms first used?

Killing things, presumably. The first guns were really just small, handheld cannons. I'm pretty sure they were used in battles in the mediaeval period as a less common, secondary unit to archers. They were very basic -pretty much just a tube with a closed end and a hole for lighting- and it took two people to use them. One to hold and aim, one to load and fire. Guns never really took of until practical, safe ways to load and fire were developed later on.

Prior to the manufacture of guns the military depended on swords, spears, fire weapons and other more crude weapons. This meant wars were fought one on one. The advance of the gun made it possible to fire at a person farther away. However, the first guns were not accurate so they still had to be close to the enemy. Eventually guns did get developed to where they were accurate. Machine guns became an assault gun that could kill many enemies all at once, at least until the ammo ran out.

The reason we have guns is that we have wars. It is a case of either you get killed or the enemy gets killed. I know your next question is why do we have wars? We have wars when one people group wants or needs something and another people group want something different. War is basically the violent effort to persuade the other side to give up his "want or need" and to surrender to the side that wins the war.
