Killing things, presumably. The first guns were really just small, handheld cannons. I'm pretty sure they were used in battles in the mediaeval period as a less common, secondary unit to archers. They were very basic -pretty much just a tube with a closed end and a hole for lighting- and it took two people to use them. One to hold and aim, one to load and fire. Guns never really took of until practical, safe ways to load and fire were developed later on.
