Mental hospitals- had pleasant surroundings and opportunities for outdoor exercise. A private asylum kept people from hurting themselves or others through separation and supervision instead of putting patients in straight jackets or chaining them to the wall.

Medical hospitals and mental hospitals were very unsanitary because of lack of knowledge of germs and diseases spread rapidly. Hospitals were known as "gateways of death"
