They were mostly wooden, some cast iron, single handled, could be much like a digging stick attached to a wooden log. The handle for the plow operator was to steady the plow so it did not flip or jump out of the ground. Usually plows were cumbersome, heavy, and hard on the animals pulling them. Prior to the late 1700's, the design was often according to the farmer's preference and or tool making ability and/or the local blacksmith's preferences and ability. Metal was expensive and people thought iron poisoned the soil so some did not want to use too much of it on their plows. The plow design invented by Thomas Jefferson was the start of the modern plow we see now.
