The answer to this question relates to a long held belief, from ancient Egypt at least, that a major cause of disease was 'bad' smells. This belief took on much more significance from the Medieval period with the outbreak of pandemics, namely bubonic and pneumonic plague and the devastating effects on the population. There were several outbreaks of these diseases during the Tudor period and with a rapidly growing capitol, public health issues were severe and yet poorly regulated, leaving the populace to seek self remedy, hence the use of pomanders.
