A common nickname for Ellis Island during the 1800s was "The Gateway to America." It served as the primary immigration station from 1892 to 1954, processing millions of newcomers. During its operation, it is estimated that around 2% of immigrants were excluded from entry, which translates to approximately 250,000 individuals who were denied access to the United States.
During the American Revolution, George Washington had security problems. The solution was to assemble a body guard unit of German only speaking immigrants. They were called Von Leer's Light Dragoons. My GGGGGrandfather was a member of this unit. It is an example of immigrants helping America.
Chinese immigrants brought items such as cooking utensils, clothing, herbs and medicines, tools, and personal items on their journey to America. They also brought food supplies like rice, dried seafood, and preserved fruits to sustain them during the long voyage.

The British Colony of America was often used by Britain (and other European Countries followed the same practice) of unloading their criminals, by banishing them to the "Americas." Like Australia, America was loosely used by European Nations as a "Penal Colony."
