Depended on what they did. A "smith" was a person who made things like guns, jewelry, shoes. Men who worked in more dirty jobs were often called "leather aprons" because that is what they wore. A blacksmith wore a leather apron so he could have been called according do what he did or wore. People's names today often reflect what their ancestors did in the past because the person's name was his occupation. A person named "Baker" today could have had someone in the family history by the job of a "Baker". Some jobs are gone like a "cooper". This person made barrels and chests because that is what was used to carry and ship things. We also no longer have "rat catchers" and these were men who put a sweet smelling oil on their hands to catch rats.
