Many early colonist were involved in religious orders, some were ministers, others aldermen, Sunday and regular school teachers. although freedom of the press was not a right many newspapers, pamphlets and almanacs were written and published in the colonies they employed writers and skilled printing press operators but also unskilled laborers that sorted letters, applied, ink, cleaned the machines and sold the product. In the north coal mines, and steel smelters worked long hours, others worked in large weaving factories. Lumberjacks cut trees to build ships for the trade business. Of course breweries also existed as did pubs, Inns and boarding houses. Laundry in cities was usually available to be done by a widow as was clothing repair and hat making. hope this helps.
