What were some of the changes and advancements during the Middle Kingdom period?

The reunification of Upper and Lower Egypt in the beginning of this period was the most important change, although at the end of the Middle Kingdom three hundred years later, the country had fallen apart again.. A major advance in government was that local government was put into the hands of bureaucrats who governed as public servants instead of the earlier local potentates (the 'Nomarchs') who saw their region as their personal fief.
