Napoleon used a variety of tactics to defeat his enemies - one of his greatest strengths was in his flexibility and unpredictability. However, a few that Napoleon repeatedly used to great success include:

  • Speed - Napoleon was famous for moving faster than his enemies could or even could anticipate, both on a battlefield and in moving generally.
  • Massed Artillery - Particularly in later campaigns Napoleon would focus large artillery batteries to destroy enemy positions. Napoleon was an artillery officer and had was very aware of the huge advantage effective artillery can bring.
  • Infantry Column - Napoleon often advanced his infantry in columns, which could break an enemy line and focus a lot of power on one point.
  • Manoeuvrability - like speed, this is not a specific tactic but Napoleon had a superb grasp of battle tactics and would use terrain to outmanoeuvre his opponents.
  • Heavy Cavalry - Napoleon sometimes used cavalry charges to achieve breakthroughs, but not as often.
