The Italian military was very impressive, on parade, at home, on a sunny summer day. They looked GREAT, wonderful uniforms, splendid feathers in their dress uniform hats, the best leather boots, and belts that money could buy. The officers were magnificent on their horses, and the trucks were shined to a high state of polish, and gleamed as they rolled down the streets of Rome.

The only problem? When the Italians actually had to fight a modern, well trained army, such as the Australains, or the British, the Italians fell apart, and surrendered in their thousands. They didn't want to get hurt, never mind get killed, for their Duce.

Ask any Canadian veteran who fought in Italy for his opinion of the qualty of the Italian Army in WW2. I bet he says they were a rabble, who couldn't wait to surrender, at the first opportunity. The Germans, on the other hand wree a totally diffrent story. They fought hard, every day.

Their superiorty in the air was amazing and had the largest in the war also but what led them to their downfall is that Italy was busy protecting the eastern front of Russia while Hitler was trying to invade and conquer Egypt. The allies came and into Africa and started gettin attacked by native gueirrla fighters and the allies so then Italy was forced to retreat to help Hitler but still lost and their air force split forced them to loose as then the soviets advanced and then soon the allies took advantage and attacked one of the medditearnean islands important to Italy. Italy was a major power prior to WW2. what i have learned from my relatives was. when Mussolini annouced the war against America. nobody in their town cheered. half of their relatives were in US and Britain.

Also in WW1 they were allies to US , France and Britain.

the industry was based on 1930's technology when other major powers advanced theirs. Begining 1940 with semi adequate technology.

the air power and the artillery arm was very professional. accounts of bravery throughtout all fronts have been reported. the average soldier in the fuciliere units were national guard at best. that is where most of the units did surrender due to lack fighting spirit and grossed mistrust of the offiicers.

the armor fought braverly but were also undergunned by 1941. most units gave up due to lack of fuel and supplies.

the bersagliere were the regular soldiers and the alpini were the best. These units were known as hard as nails fighters.

if the industry did more to serve the nation than themselves. kept abreast of technology. Plus the will of the average citizen did not support the war.

they should have stuck with their allies.

German weaknesses during WW 2One of Germanys weaknesses was the wanity of its generals. For instance German generals ordered London to be bombed during daytime to show German supremacy. However RAF was alerted of this attack sooner than of those during the night and their pilots had better view of enemy planes. After a few sutch attack the Luftwaffe was so cut down in numbers that they did bombing runs only during night. The greatest error Germany did was to attack Russia before crushing French and Great Britain (this was done because Hitler did not approve of Stalins communism - a difference in ideology amongst other things).

They were, once again, trying to fight a two-front war. Too much of their resources were taken up with Hitler's Final Solution instead of being used to prosecute the war. Although Hitler's micromanaging of the military led to early success in Poland, the Low Countries, Norway, and France, early in the war. It became a liability when he was out of his depth in Russia and against the Normandy invasion. He had no grasp of elastic defense and made unrealistic demands of his commanders and his troops. Ultimately The Fürer Principle eliminated individual initiative and prevented commanders from making effective local decisions. Also, the early successes backfired by spreading the forces too thin.
