They covered far more of the body than they do now- men's swimsuits were similar to the kind worn by the gymnasts of the day, one-piece skin-tight garments with full-length arms and knee-length legs, that buttoned up at the back. They were often designed in bright stripey colours.

Women's costumes were similar but the leggings were often in knickerbocker style, with frilly lacey edges. They also often had short lace-trimmed skirts around the waist, but were usually in plain colours.
