There were different kinds of infantry, depending on how heavily they were armored. Also, some infantry carried weapons especially designed to deal with knights.

There were different kinds of archers, bowmen, longbowmen, and crossbowmen. A bowman was not quite the same as a longbowman, because the longbow required a lot of practice to be strong enough to use it.

Artillery in most of the medieval times consisted of catapults of varying kinds. Some of these were huge and could throw the whole body of a dead cow. Others had projectiles like arrows. In the end, of course, there were cannons.

Ensigns carried flags, drummers carried drums, pipes and trumpets were also used. All of these were for signaling.
