What were the Joseph McCarthy trials about?

We're doing the Crucible in English that was written by Arthur Miller as a link to the McCarthy trials. As far as we have researched we have found out that the McCArthy trails were about finding ommmunists in America after the 2nd world wr as the government were worried about being overthrown. McCarthy was unfair in the way he trailed suspects, he gave them two choises, either admit to communism and go to jail or lose all your rights and belongings, or tell them of people you know who are communists. Obviously this did not really work as people lied to get out of jail. But yeah, as far as i know that's what it is. :)
