On day 1 the Scots spear formations repelled English cavalry attacks.

On day2 - the main battle - the Scots moved down from high ground, formed up on a flat level field and advanced. The intial English counter-attack was repulsed and theri leading elements were forced back onto the main body of the army. Unable to manouevre and bring their greqater numbers to bear efffectively, the Englsih were forced back onto soft ground and the River Forth and were comprehensively defeated with huge loss.
