Napoleon III did a variety of things for France, but he is most famous and known today by historians for two domestic accomplishments: developing the economy and rebuilding France's capital.

Napoleon III was a firm believer in personal rule and developing a centralized state. He took steps to develop the economyof France. He had great faith in industrial expansion and national glory. Thus, he encouraged many progressive economic developments, such as credit and other new forms of financing. His government passed limited-liability laws to increase growth and also supported the founding of the Credit Mobilier, an investment banking institution that publicly sold shares and financed enterprises such as railroads, insurance, gas companies, coal and construction industries, and the building of the Suez Canal.

But, above all, Napoleon III is most well-known for his rebuilding France's capital. Paris's medieval infrastructure was simply not working with industrial development. Only one house in five had running water in 1850. The Credit Mobilier (mentioned above) simply took down most of the medieval center of the city and erected 34000 new buildings, among which were elegant hotels with the first elevators. New water pipes and sewer lines were installed. 200 km of new streets were laid out. Wide new boulevards radiated outwards from the Arc de Triomphe.
