Conditions at a death camp were as it sounds in the title "death camp". There was mass starvation and gas chambers were killing thousands every week. And disease such as typhoid fever, malaria, and other infections were standard for most people. inside barracks where hundreds of people slept, there was long rows of bunk beds with no mattress but sometimes hay, and two or more people shared one bunk with one blanket per person. guards did not need reason or permission to kill Jews. Escape attempts were punished by death from either torture or the gas chamber.
There terrible places to be!..
The purpose of a death camp was when Jews were sent for mass murdering, (genocide). This is not the same as a concentration camp, only because it was where political prisoners were confined, usually under harsh conditions and the camps functioned as prisons and centers of forced labor.
Dachau was an ordinary concentration camp, not an extermination camp. Its main purpose was a punishment and labour camp for political prisoners. Obviously, conditions there were bad, but it was not comparable to extermination camps like Treblinka. Most of the Jews at Dachau were there because of their politics. Wikipedia gives the death toll at Dachau and its sub-camps as about 35,000.

Bergen-Belsen was a concentration camp. It was NOT a death camp.

Murder by the Nazis - no matter what the ultimate means were - was a brutal death. Anne died of runaway typhus in a camp where she was sent with a Nazi commander who simply ignored the inmates and let them fend for themselves.
