The Battle of Atlanta signed the unstoppable decline of the Confederate military power in the West. The seize of the city and its destruction deprived the Southerners of the most important strategic point in that sector and opened the gate to the deep Union penetration developed in November 1864 by Sherman's Army, by the start of "the March to the Sea", the decisive factor which sped up the collapse of the Confederacy.
