The effect of the battle was at the time surprising for both the Confederacy and the Union. To begin, it established the true face of the war and gave both the Union and the Confederacy a glimpse at how bloody the war would be. Moreover, both the North and the South believed the war would be quick and short - the North believed the Union Army would quickly decimate the Confederacy, the Confederacy would come back with its tail between its legs, so to speak, and the Union would thus be restored. The First Battle of Bull Run, extinguished this idea.

On a smaller note, the battle also showed how unprepared the armies were - both the Union and the Confederacy. And looking in retrospect, it also foreshadowed the switching of Union commanders throughout the Civil War, as Brig. General Irvin McDowell clearly was not capable of leading the Union army successfully.
