During the Gold Rush, the primary hardship routes included the overland trails, such as the California Trail and the Oregon Trail, which faced challenges like rough terrain, harsh weather, and limited supplies. Many prospectors also opted for sea routes, sailing around Cape Horn or taking the Isthmus of Panama route, both of which involved significant dangers, disease, and delays. The journey was fraught with obstacles like scarcity of food, conflicts with Native Americans, and the risk of accidents, resulting in a perilous trek for those seeking fortune.
