In my opinion, I think that death would be one of the biggest hardships on the trail. Often mothers were left widows with several young children to care for, or parents lost their young children and had to bury them out in the middle of nowhere! Being pregnant and giving birth on the trail would also be very difficult. They faced starvation, being overworked, extreme climates, and illness as well.
