Some 3,000 Native American warriors wiped out about 225 members of the U.S. Seventh Cavalry. The long term effect of that battle led to the massacre of Indigenous women, children and elderly at Wounded Knee, SD in 1890, virtually bringing to a close the Indian wars that raged across America since the arrival of Columbus in 1492.
