The drought in the west, known as the Dust Bowl, exacerbated the Great Depression in several ways. It led to widespread crop failures, destroyed farmland, and caused massive dust storms, which displaced many farmers and their families. These conditions worsened the economic hardship already experienced during the Great Depression, as it reduced agricultural output, caused food shortages, and created massive unemployment in rural areas.
Well they didnt because they played with their selfs Edit: People in cities lost their jobs and homes, lived in shantytowns, and got food from soup kitchens and bread lines.
Some rural Georgians reportedly never realized there was a Great Depression during the late 1920s and 1930s because their economic conditions had already been dire before the Great Depression began. Many were engaged in subsistence farming, living off the land and relying on barter systems, which insulated them from the broader economic collapse affecting urban areas. Additionally, the lack of access to information and media in rural regions meant they were less aware of the national economic turmoil. The persistent poverty and limited resources made it difficult for them to perceive a significant change in their already challenging livelihoods.
Georgia's economy managed to withstand the Great Depression largely due to its agricultural sector, which remained relatively stable as many residents continued to rely on farming for their livelihoods. The state also benefited from New Deal programs that provided jobs and infrastructure improvements, such as the Rural Electrification Act, which enhanced productivity in rural areas. Additionally, Georgia's diverse economy, which included textiles and timber, helped cushion the impact of the economic downturn. Overall, a combination of agricultural resilience and federal support played a key role in mitigating the effects of the Great Depression in Georgia.
