Children received many cruel punishments. If the child did not get enough work done then the master would whip him until he was bruised all over and was bleeding. They would also be dipped in water cisterns until they couldn't breath and made to work even harder. They had to be punctual and not arrive late otherwise they would often face a whipping with a horse whip. Many were hit so hard that they formed lumps on their head and these burst if they were hit again leading to searing agony. Even standing/sitting their all day could be called punishment and children grew up deformed and without excercise leading to cases of bow legs and knocked knees. It was very tough and some punishments even lead to death.
