"Racist" attitudes didn't exist in the 15th or 16th centuries. "Racism" as a concept did not exist until the 18th century at the earliest. It rose out of attempts to identify different ethnicities, and devolved into ways to place members of other ethnic groups at a lower, less developed cultural level.
