Many of them were Puritans. They believed, among other things, that God no longer spoke to his people except through The Bible, and that sex was for procreation between married people only and even they couldn't enjoy it. They also believed in public punishment for violation of religious law, such as a three-hour stint in the stocks. In short, they believed in being miserable.
