clean and cook Well, certainly many did clean and cook, or supervise those who did. Others, though, ran their husbands' businesses or had businesses of their own. Some made a living as midwives, servants, housekeepers, farmers, silversmiths, seamstresses, shopkeepers, printers, artists, writers, laundresses, street sellers, and in other professions. Some who worked side-by-side with their husbands in their businesses were recognized as that business's owner and operator after the husband's death or incapacity. Those who supervised a home staff were responsible not only for making sure their staff knew and performed all the processes and routines involved, but kept the budget, managed household correspondence, negotiated for best prices for household goods, hired and fired, arranged or themselves supplied education for male and female children. Their most common role was to carry the burden of running the household and keeping the family ('family' included servants, relatives - anyone who lived in the house) safe and healthy and well-clothed. Those who managed businesses more often than not managed their households at the same time.
