As a child in Medieval times, your parents (if wealthy enough) would have two choices. To put you in for Knight training, the included learning fighting skills and learning to ride a horse which was done around the age of 7.

The other choice was Church, usually the first sons of wealthy families would be put in for Knighthood, whilst the younger sons would be given to the Church, these children could go on to become Bishops, whilst the sons trained in Knighthood could go onto become Knights in battle.
