What were the steps taken to be become a knight?

As a child in Medieval times, your parents (if wealthy enough) would have two choices. To put you in for Knight training, the included learning fighting skills and learning to ride a horse which was done around the age of 7.

The other choice was Church, usually the first sons of wealthy families would be put in for Knighthood, whilst the younger sons would be given to the Church, these children could go on to become Bishops, whilst the sons trained in Knighthood could go onto become Knights in battle.

When a boy reached the age of 7-8 that is when he got introduced to sports such as hunting, riding and Wrestling to build strength and stamina and take lessons in chivalry and religion. Eventually at 13 he would be assigned to a veteran knight as a sergeant-esquire where he would have looked after his master's weapons, armour, accoutriments and horse in order to guage a picture of what he needed to do as a knight. At this age he would be also practising the joust and learning how to fight with the Knightly weapons. When he reached a level deemed acceptable he would be dubbed in the presence of his immediate lord and a preist and thus he would begin his new life s a knight.
