Like other countries that established colonies, Spain sought financial gain from the raw materials and produce from its colonies . It also needed friendly ports for its navy. The king gained income by selling the land in the colonies and by taxing its citizens. The Spanish was especially interested in extracting gold from the New World.

Two goals of the Spanish exploration of the Western Hemisphere were shared by all the major players that went there. These goals center around gaining wealth & power for there homelands.

One goal may be said to stand out more so with Spanish explorers than with those of other European nations. With that said, a case could be made for spreading Catholicism.

Undoubtedly the others, whether France, Great Britain, Netherlands, perhaps Portugal believed that one way to "civilize" Native Americans was to spread Christianity. It seems however that Spain placed a bit more effort to spread their religion.
