Most war captives were enslaved. Their fate depended upon their attitudes. If they were belligerent or rebellious, they were either sent to a gladiatorial school or used in farming or the mines. Treatment in these places was brutal. However if they accepted their situation they received better treatment, better owners, and the opportunity to work their way out of slavery.
