The ancient Egyptian word for whip is written smi in hieroglyphs, connected with the verb meaning "to punish". There is also a word meaning "whipping post" so we can say that people were tied to a sturdy post before being whipped as a form of punishment. It is likely that whips were constructed of leather strips woven together, much like a modern bull-whip, but no examples have survived.

Contrary to popular belief, pyramid workers were not encouraged to work faster by being whipped, nor is the flail carried by pharaohs a whip (it is actually a symbolic fly-whisk).
