Well, depending on the time of year, there wouldn't always be an event going on.

On festival days, there would be huge crowds approaching the building, and it would be difficult to travel. You might stop at one of the public restrooms on the way there to relieve yourself, or maybe the bathhouse to clean up and chat with some friends. After grabbing a bite to eat in one of the little breakfast shops on the way, you could climb up the steps to a seat- closer to the front if you were wealthy, and farther away and higher if you were poor. Depending on the weather, the roof to the Colosseum would be open or closed. First off, there might be some gladiator games, either one on one, or multiple people against each other. These wouldn't be the most exciting ones, but they might be interesting to watch. Then there might be some time for lunch, and you could either leave to go get something to eat or stay and watch the public executions. After all the criminals and other wrongdoers (or Christians) had been executed, the real fun would begin. There might be any sort of event- cripples fighting each other, strong men fighting little men, lions, tigers, bears, elephants, battle reenactments, naval battles, etc. After watching the event, you would either walk home or be carried in a litter, depending on your status.
