There are complicated rules for this. Louis XVI, for example, had a son, but he died young and childless, so the succession should have gone to his younger broother, but there wasn't one; so the succession reverted to Louis XVI's younger brother, who became Louis XVIII. When he died, also childless, he was succeeded by yet another brother, Charles X.
