What would happen if we didn't have equality?

Equality means no leaders which means no direction. The only way to achieve equality is to turn society into a sort of hive mind where nobody has personal hopes, dreams or wishes, but rather strive for advancement of the whole. If this were the case we would lose what it means to be human and be no better than the animals, or even the insects. Individuality would be lost which means advancements of the individual with them, like Einstein's findings, Thomas Eddison's light bulb, etc. We would never have got out of the mud.

Perhaps if we invent robots of the non-sentient kind who perform menial tasks without hesitation or protest we could live in an equal society. As it stands, there are certainly imbalances that could be avoided, but I don't see it happening in the near future.
