Things began for the war on terroism in 2001, when the suicide bombers attacked New York City. The Taliban people (the bad guys) were prepared for a fight. Instead of keeping things only in Iraq, the Taliban spread to Afghanistan and Iran. For more information watch "Charlie Wilson's War"
At the start of the war, the U.S. supported the Northern Alliance, who were a group of rebels opposed to the Taliban government. Which one? The Soviets invaded in 1979, and the country's pretty much seen constant fighting ever since. As for the current war in Afghanistan, the al-Qaeda branch based in Afghanistan attacked the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, killing almost 3000 people. The Taliban supported al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, so the US responded by attacking the Taliban. The Americans had the support of the Northern Alliance, the internationally recognized government of Afghanistan at the time. The Northern Alliance would only support the operation if the US promised to stay and restore order after the Taliban had been ousted.

Usama Bin Laden, the leader of the terrorist group Al Queda and mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, was based in Afghanistan. After the September 11th Attacks, there was a policy change that dictated that anyone harboring those who attacked us would not be treated any different than those who did the attack. When the Taliban, the then governing body in Afghanistan, refused to hand over Bin Laden, the US Military was tasked to remove the Taliban and pursue Al Queda. That was the start of the now 9yr war.
