On September 21, 1780, during the American Revolution, American General Benedict Arnold commits treason when he meets with British Major John Andre to discuss handing over West Point to the British, in return for the promise of a large sum of money and a high position in the British army. In 1780, Arnold was given command of West Point, but the plot was foiled. Major John Andre was caught and hanged. Benedict Arnold escaped to the British side. After the war ended, he went to England where he was never given what had been promised to him. He died in 1801. There were two reasons behind his decision to help the British. The main reason is his second marriage to a very wealthy Philadelphia lady who demanded a lot. Secondly, he was in debt.
