It started with the pilgrims and Columbus when he wanted to discover more land. He was really looking for a quicker route East when he stopped on what is now called America. He set out on this voyage on 1492, and from then on people have migrated to where the Indians lived. America was a land of immigrants.

Official immigration policies started with Ellis Island in 1892. The first immigrant to go through Ellis Island was Annie Moore, a 17-year-old girl. She was from Cork, Ireland, and arrived on the ship, Nevada, on January 1, 1892.
