The transition of the US role in the world took place gradually near the end of the 19th century.
The US became a leading world power beginning with the Union's army and navy buildup during the Civil War,which ended in 1865. The expansion of its North American territories "from sea to sea" was generally completed about 10 years later. The extension of US armed forces in the Spanish American War (1898) marked the recognition of the country's miltary and industrial abilities. Although not well-prepared for either World War (in 1914 and in 1939), the country rapidly expanded its armed forces for each of the conflicts. Finally, the development of nuclear weapons in 1945 marked the final ascension to world superpower status.

In Ancient Rome, the most powerful magistrates were the consuls, of whom two were elected each year. The consuls held supreme authority in both military and civil matters and acted as the heads of state. Their term lasted one year, and to prevent the concentration of power, they had the ability to veto each other's decisions. This dual system ensured a balance in governance and accountability.
