The US began sending "military advisors" along with the CIA in 1955, shortly after hostilities began between the North and South. By 1960, there were a considerable number of non-combat US Military in the country. It was not until the Tonkin Gulf incident in 1964 that President Lyndon Johnson decided to commit ground troops and aircraft, which began in early 1965.
