The Hundred Years' War, between the English and the French, went form 1337 to 1453. They were fighting for the control of France. The English king, Edward III, was the son of Isabella of France, who was the daughter of the King of France, Phillip IV. When Phillip IV's sons all died, the French nobles elected his nephew, Phillip of Valois (his brother Charles's son) to be king, rather than Edward III of England.

So the whole war was a fight between the French and English monarchs for the French crown, and, of course, France itself!

The English got the best of it until 1429, when they had the city of Orleans, which was the key to all of southern France, under siege. The English, with their Burgundian allies, already had control of Paris and all of northern France. Joan of Arc, claiming divine inspiration, took command of the French armies and actually raised the siege of Orleans in 9 days (May 1 thru 9, 1429). This turned

the tide of the war for the French, leading to the French dauphin being crowned

King Charles VII at Rheims in July, 1429, and ultimately to the complete expulsion of the English from France by 1453.

Joan, unfortunately, was captured by the Burgundians in May, 1430, sold to the English, who then had Joan tried for heresy in a mock trial, and burnt her at the stake on May 30, 1431. She was later found innocent in a nullification trial called for by the pope in the 1450's and was declared a saint by the Catholic Church in 1920. (It took so long because of various French political situations.)
