It started in April 1865 with the Confederate firing on a federal military installation - Fort Sumter (in South Carolina) - to dislodge the federal soldiers who held it. After this, Lincoln called for volunteers from the states & both sides prepared to fight.
The episode at Sumter came about because seven southern states seceded in response to the election of Lincoln to the Presidency (as they had threatened to do if ANY Republican were elected to that office) --fearing the Republican promise to prevent slavery's spread into U.S. territories, and expecting them to work to end slavery in the South -- but Lincoln would not accept the acts of secession.
In other words - southern secession (and the Union's refusal to accept it), led to the war. As for the deeper question of what led to SECESSION, many have claimed that the South was simply trying to protect their "states rights". But the ONLY rights the South explicitly mentioned as threatened (not necessarily actually violated yet!) concerned their rights to own slaves, and more than that, to move with them into new territories (with the hope of making them also slave states).
The location that arked the beginning of the civil war was Gettysburg.
